It's no longer big-news that AI is transforming the way software development is being done. With AI being more intelligent, ubiquitous and highly skilled at not just generating code but building fully featured applications from start to finish, this has given rise to AI coding agents and tools that automate how engineers build software in recent times.

With AI models like Claude Opus 4.6, Sonnet 4.6, OpenAI's GPT-5, Gemini 3, Qwen 3.5, and GLM being highly proficient at writing code, a wave of coding tools and agents have been released to help developers automate their work and become more productive. However, with great power also comes great responsibilities. Building with AI coding agents has a lot of advantages and also a lot of disadvantages. It could make you move fast in building features from end-to-end and it can also become a bottleneck when you run into bugs, performances, failing tests or just some bad coding conventions.

Let's be clear on one thing, this article is about software development with coding agents (context-based engineering) and not vibe-coding. For one, I have discovered a lot of people mix up the two more often than not. "Vibe-coding" is a term coined by Andrej Karpathy to describe using AI coding agents to quickly prototype applications from start to finish without any supervision or even knowing how the code works — hence the term “Vibes". Vibe-coding is ideal if you quickly want to ideate on ideas, prototype an ambiguous workflow or just build quick projects for a personal problem. However, if you are working on a production level project, vibe-coding is not an ideal practise because you will still be required to maintain and extend the application putting into consideration best practises to ensure user safety and security, code readability and performance advantages. Trust me telling the AI “don't make mistakes" will not get this done for you.

Now, I have made this clarification. Let's now delve (lol, sorry Paul) into AI powered software development otherwise known as context based engineering or prompt-based engineering — the former term (context based engineering) is more suitable to describe the act of using AI to write programs and software. Before I continue, it's important you know the meaning of certain terminologies that will be stated here.

• LLM (Large Language Model): A type of AI trained on massive amounts of text data to understand and generate human language. Examples include GPT-5, Claude, and Gemini.

• AI Agent: An AI system that can autonomously perform tasks on your behalf — like reading files, running commands, editing code, and making decisions — rather than just generating text in a chat window.

• Prompt (noun): The instruction, question, or input you give to an AI model to get a response. Think of it as your request or command.

• Prompt (verb): The act of writing and sending instructions to an AI model. When someone says “I prompted Claude to refactor my code,” they mean they gave it a specific instruction to do so.

• Context Window: The maximum amount of text (input + output) an AI model can process in a single conversation. Think of it as the model’s short-term memory — anything outside the window, it can’t see or reference.

• Token(s): The small chunks of text that an AI model reads and generates. A token can be a full word, part of a word, or even a punctuation mark. For example, the word “engineering” might be split into two or three tokens. Context windows and pricing are measured in tokens.

• Coding agent: An AI agent specifically designed for software development tasks. It can read your codebase, write and edit code, run terminal commands, install dependencies, and debug errors, all within your development environment. Popular examples include: Claude Code, Cursor, Opencode, Codex and GitHub Copilot.

What is Context Based Engineering?

Context-Based Engineering is the methodological use of AI coding agents across the software development process — not just to write code, but to build features end-to-end using the right prompts, context, and documentation. It's letting AI help you code on purpose, not just on vibes. You remain part of the process, verifying every outcome.

It goes beyond just text-generation or copying and pasting code generated by an ChatGPT — this time, the AI is actually accessing files in your computers, editing some, deleting some and creating some in order to build out features or integrations. AI coding agents can even run CLI (Command Line Interface) commands on your behalf and help review code. Whether your starting from scratch or initialising it in an existing codebase from scratch, AI coding agents are capable of getting this done most times even faster than you would on your own.

Speed comes at a cost. As Dijkstra put it, "If debugging is the process of removing software bugs, then programming must be the process of putting them in." AI makes programming way faster — this means that it can also write more bugs even faster. That's why you have to be methodical and meticulous when prompting an AI agent to write code for you and a good way to do that. If you don't, AI may end up generating code that is difficult to read, unmaintainable, and filled with bugs and security vulnerabilities. Doing context-based engineering correctly ensures AI produces code that is safer, more readable, and easier to maintain.

There are a number of advantages to using AI coding agents properly as part of your software development workflow — they include:

• Build features faster by automating boilerplate code and generating complex logic patterns in seconds.

• Ability to work on multiple tasks at once by offloading implementation details to the agent while you focus on high-level architecture.

• Real-time research and troubleshooting to resolve technical blockers and syntax queries without ever leaving your IDE.

• Proactive error detection that identifies potential bugs and edge cases during the writing phase rather than the testing phase.

• Reduced cognitive load, allowing you to stay in “the flow” by automating the mundane, repetitive aspects of programming.

However if not done right, you can run into the following issues:

• Code bloat, as AI agents tend to over-generate code, adding unnecessary logic and implementations that inflate your codebase and make it harder to maintain.

• Reduced code quality when prompts are vague or context is insufficient, leading to poorly structured code, inconsistent naming conventions, and patterns that don’t align with your project’s architecture.

• Security vulnerabilities introduced by generated code that may use outdated libraries, expose sensitive data, or implement authentication and validation patterns incorrectly, especially when the developer accepts output without thorough review.

• Increased technical debt, as AI-generated code that "just works" piles up without refactoring, making the codebase difficult to understand and maintain.

• Weakened problem-solving skills, as over-reliance on AI agents can dull a developer's understanding of core fundamentals and ability to debug complex issues independently.

So how can one do to properly use coding agents to automate software engineering without any disadvantages.

The Basic Architecture of Context-Based Engineering

To understand how context-based engineering works with coding agents, it helps to visually see the architecture — how different components of your workspace interact with the agent.

The arrows show the flow of information: red arrows indicate input sent to the model, while blue arrows indicate output from the agent. Red shapes represent content spaces, gold shapes represent tools and applications, and blue rectangles represent scopes.

Here's a breakdown of the architecture:

Coding agent

At the core is the AI coding agent. This is the program powered by a capable LLMs like that makes changes and updates to the codebase based on instructions it has received. Some great for coding agents include:

• Claude code (Paid): A popular AI coding agent powered by Anthropic's Claude Opus and Sonnet models. It is a CLI based coding agent. There is also a Visual Studio Code (VS code) extension and Zed IDE plugin. To use it you have to subscribe to Anthropic's Pro plan ($20 a month) or Anthropic's Max plan ($200 a month). You can also use the API plan which is a pay-as-you-go model that bills you based on usage.

• GitHub Copilot (Freemium): You can call this the OG coding agent — released in June 29, 2021 as an intelligent tab completion AI companion. It is the default AI agent in VS code and it has extensions for other IDEs like Zed and IntelliJ. It gives you access multiple coding LLMs like Claude, GPT, Gemini, Kimi and Qwen. You can use it as a chat window extension or in the CLI. It has an limited free plan, a cheaper Pro plan ($10 a month) than Claude code, and a ($39) Pro+ plan.

• Cursor (Freemium): A powerful AI powered IDE that gives you access to multiple coding models. It's is a VS code fork, so it wouldn't be hard to migrate to if you are a VS code user. It's relatively easier to navigate than other CLI tools and it a host of other great features. The free plan however, is very limited and their paid plans include Pro ($20 a month), Pro + ($60 a month) and an Ultra plan ($200 a month). You can also use their API plan.

• Codex (Free and Paid): This is a coding agent made by OpenAI powered by GPT models. There is an intuitive GUI application and CLI interface. The UI of the GUI is intuitive and the GPT models rival Claude in frontend design and data science. You can use it with with limits for the free or subscribe to OpenAI's plan to gain more usage. The source code is open-source.

• Opencode (Open-source): This is a very performant coding agent that let's you use a myriad of LLMs. One great thing about Opencode is that it let's you use paid models like Claude, Gemini and GPT alongside free open-source models like Qwen 3.5 coder, Kimi K2.5, GLM-5 and Gemma 3, some of which you can run locally on your own computer.

Other great mentions include WindSurf (which is similar to Cursor), Kiro (similar to Cursor but advocates for specs driven development), Gemini CLI (Made by Google and does more than just coding), Antigravity (Google's Cursor alternative), Kilo code (a robust coding agent extension on VScode), Pi (an open-source highly extendable AI model) and T3code (an open-source and more performant alternatives to Codex with GPT and Claude models). Just pick one and get going.

Personally, I use Claude Code (Pro plan) for both the VS Code extension and CLI for automated flows, alongside GitHub Copilot (Pro plan) autocomplete because they work great as part of my daily workflow. That said, I'm currently exploring tools like Opencode, Pi, and T3 Code, so this setup may change soon. If you're a student, you can apply for student programs by GitHub and other providers that offer free or discounted access to their agents.

Context Window

When it comes to context-based engineering with AI coding agents, the context window is a very important component. Context window is the maximum amount of tokens a model can process in a single conversation. When you start a conversation with a coding agent, a new context-window is created to track tokens consumed by both your prompts and the agent's responses.

Every prompt you send, every file the agent reads, every command it runs, and every response it generates eats into this window. Once the limit is reached, the agent starts losing visibility of earlier parts of the conversation, which can lead to repeated mistakes, forgotten instructions, hallucinations or inconsistent code. This is why being intentional about what you feed into the context window matters — the more focused and relevant the input, the better the output.

See the context window as the working desk memory of an AI model and their a just a limited amount things it can handle on it desk at a time.

It is easy to max out the context window of a model if you're working on a really large codebase. Coding agents also seem to “forget" about your codebase when you open a new conversation — almost like they can't recall the instructions you gave it in a previous conversation. This is because a new conversation has a completely different context window from the previous one.

In order to ensure your coding agent doesn't lose context of what it's working on and also not max out the context-window of the conversation, you need to provide instruction files with concise in the directory your working in.

Prompting Interface

In order to provide instructions to coding agents, you need a prompting interface. This could be a GUI chat interface, CLI commands, a terminal UI, or voice tools. When you prompt the coding agent, your instruction needs to be detailed yet concise so that the AI can understand exactly what you want it to build, why it matters, and how it should be implemented. Vague prompts lead to vague results. The more context you provide — such as the expected behaviour, constraints, and edge cases — the better the output.

Just remember, every prompt you send adds to your context window.

Project Directory

This is the working folder that the AI agent is making changes to. It contains the following:

• Config files that dictate the behaviour, dependencies and environment of the application you’re working on.

• Source code files used in building the application.

• Test files that ensure the app and its implementations behave the way they are meant to.

• Context files which include README.md, rules files (AGENTS.md, .cursorrules), skills, and PRDs. Context files help manage the agent’s understanding of your project and keep it on track while making changes, without compromising code quality.

Rules file

When using coding agents to build an application, one of the most important files to have in your project directory is the rules file. This file is usually located at the root of your project and is the first thing your agent reads each time a new conversation starts.

The rules file explains the codebase to the agent: the file structure, tools and dependencies used, coding conventions, testing strategy, and any project-specific constraints the agent needs to respect.

The specific rules file depends on the agent you’re using. Claude Code uses a CLAUDE.md file, Gemini uses a GEMINI.md file, Cursor uses .cursorrules alongside .mdc rule files, and other agents follow the conventional AGENTS.md format. If you’re working with a team where members use different agents, I recommend maintaining a single RULES.md file in a /docs folder, then referencing it from each agent’s rules file in the root directory. Something like this:

@docs/RULES.md

This way, you only have to maintain one file as your codebase grows and requirements change.

Keep your rules file concise. Don’t include implementation details or unnecessary explanations. Straight to the point and simple.

Product Requirements Documents (PRDs)

PRDs provide implementation details that the coding agent should follow for a specific task. Think of them as a guide that outlines what to do and how to do it. PRDs are task-specific and are usually named after the task they describe, e.g. integrate-google-oauth-prd.md. You can place these files in a docs/prds folder.

A typical PRD should contain at least the following:

• Task specification

• Implementation details

• Workflow

• Testing strategy

• Acceptance criteria (with checkboxes)

PRDs are useful because they keep your coding agent on track with the changes that need to be made, even if you close a conversation abruptly and start a new one. You can point the agent to the relevant PRD and it will pick up from where things left off.

I recommend referencing the path to your PRDs folder in your RULES.md file. You can also prompt the agent itself to draft a PRD for a given task before it starts writing any code, then save it for future reference.

A general rule of thumb is keep task as modular and simple as possible. So if the task is too complex, it is recommended to break it up into even smaller tasks.

Skills

Skills are a relative new but highly useful convention. Skills are reusable instruction files that teach your coding agent how to perform specific tasks consistently. Think of them like recipes. Instead of explaining to the agent how to set up a FastAPI project with your preferred folder structure every single time, you write it once in a skill file and the agent follows it whenever that task comes up.

A skill file is typically a markdown file, e.g. fastapi-setup.md, material-design.md or nextjs-component.md, and you can store them in a docs/skills folder. Each skill should contain the steps, conventions, and constraints the agent needs to follow for that particular task. They differ from PRDs because unlike PRDs which are one-off task instructions that get completed and moved on from, skills are reusable across multiple tasks and conversations.

You can also install skills from online sources especially for best practices for external libraries and services your application relies on. Notable examples are anthropics/skills, callstackincubator/agent-skills (React Native), netlify's agent skills, microsoft's Azure SDK skills, and the Antigravity Awesome Skills library which contains over 1,200+ community-contributed skills compatible with Claude Code, Cursor, Gemini CLI, and other agents.

BE CAREFUL WHEN DOWNLOADING SKILLS, SOME OF THEM HAVE COMMANDS FOR PROMPT INJECTION IN THEM THAT MAY COMPROMISE YOUR SECURITY

Skills are especially useful when you’re working on a project with repeating patterns. For example, if every new API endpoint in your project follows the same structure (router, service, schema, test), you can write a skill for it and the agent will replicate that pattern each time without you having to re-explain it.

I recommend referencing your skills folder in your RULES.md file so the agent knows where to find them.

The Codebase

These are the files that contain the code your application is built on. The codebase is what the coding agent interacts with to implement features, apply updates, and refactor existing logic. It is important that you understand your codebase well, especially if you’re building production applications that serve real users.

Your codebase should have the following attributes:

• A well-structured and modular file architecture

• Linting and code formatting tools (e.g. ESLint, Prettier, Ruff)

• A test suite with meaningful coverage

• Clean, readable code with consistent naming conventions

• Version control with clear commit history and branching strategy

• Environment configuration and secrets managed through .env files and not hardcoded values

• Dependency management with a lockfile (e.g. package.json/package-lock.json, Cargo.toml/Cargo.lock, requirements.txt, go.mod) to track external packages and their versions

When your codebase has these attributes in place, the coding agent has a much easier time navigating and making changes without breaking things. A messy codebase with no structure, no tests, and inconsistent patterns forces the agent to guess, and guessing is where bugs come from. Think of it this way: if a new developer would struggle to understand your codebase, the agent will too.

Your rules file and skills help ensure the agent follows your project's conventions and patterns, but they're only as effective as the codebase they're applied to. A well-maintained codebase gives the agent the right foundation to work with, while a messy one undermines even the best instructions.

Tools

Tools are plugins and integrations that extend your coding agent's capabilities beyond just reading and writing code. Through protocols like MCP (Model Context Protocol), your agent can connect to external services and resources such as documentation sites, databases, design tools like Figma, project management platforms like Jira and Linear, and APIs. For example, instead of manually copying documentation into your prompt, an MCP server can give your agent direct access to the latest docs for a library or framework.

For one, I find the Figma MCP tool very useful on Claude Code because it lets me one-shot complex UI designs right from Figma into my React codebase saving me a lot of time and effort. Other notable MCP tools include:

• Context7: Fetches up-to-date, version-specific documentation and code examples directly into your agent’s context, preventing hallucinated APIs and outdated patterns.

• GitHub MCP server: Lets your agent manage pull requests, issues, and repositories without leaving your editor.

• Linear MCP server: Connects your agent to your Linear workspace so it can read tickets, update issue status, and reference task details while implementing features.

• Playwright MCP server: Gives your agent browser automation capabilities for testing, visual verification, and interacting with web pages.

• Sentry MCP server: Lets your agent query error logs, unresolved issues, and stack traces from your Sentry projects to debug faster.

Tools are a productivity hack because they eliminate the back-and-forth between your agent and you. Without them, you'd have to manually copy documentation, look up error logs, check ticket details, and paste them into your prompts. With the right MCP tools connected, your agent can pull all of that context on its own, which means fewer interruptions, faster iterations, and more time spent building.

Now you have a clear picture of the basic components that up context-based engineering architecture, it great to know how to rightly approach context-based engineering.

The Ideal Context Engineering Workflow

The ideal workflow when it comes to software engineering with AI agents doesn't differ significantly from the regular software engineering. This means if you employ best practises while working like; writing readable code, breakdown complex task into simpler ones, documenting, and testing, transitioning to using agents would not be much of a hassle.

There is a step by step guide to approaching context-based engineering:

1. Start with a plan

Before you write your first prompt to the AI you need to start with a plan. Whether it's a minor bug fix or a complex end-to-end feature, you need to understand what you need to do and the direction you need to take. Don't just throw a prompt and tell it to build something and “not make mistakes".

The planning involves the following:

1. Start with some research and brainstorming, especially when you aren't clear about how to implement a solution or you don't fully understand the problem. You can use AI chatbots outside of your coding agent like ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini for this or use plan mode. They can provide answers and point you to resources like documentation, videos, and articles that help improve your understanding. You can constantly refine your understanding by telling the AI to ask you clarifying questions.

2. Next, ask the chatbot to generate planning prompts that will help you create your rules file (if you're just starting the project) and PRD files. Specify the features you want to add and also specific tools you'd want the project to be built with. Here's an example of what a typical planning prompt looks like:

   Help me generate prompt messages for Claude Code. The project is a ticketing app built with Next.js 15, Supabase and PostgreSQL. I need prompts that will:
   
   1. Initialise the project and generate a CLAUDE.md file covering the tech stack, folder structure, coding conventions, and testing strategy.
   2. Create a PRD for implementing user authentication with Google OAuth and email/password sign-up.
   3. Create a PRD for building the ticket creation and assignment workflow.
   
   The agent should use pnpm as the package manager and not npm.
    
   The prompts should be detailed, concise, and ready to paste directly into Claude Code.

3. Review and audit the prompts generated. Ensure the prompts reference the correct files, dependencies, and conventions for your project. If anything looks off or too vague, refine it before passing it to your coding agent. The goal is to hand the agent a prompt that leaves no room for guesswork.

2. Set up the development environment

Once you have a plan and initial setup prompts for the work needed, it's time to set up development environment.

• For IDE-based coding agents, open your project directory in the app and use your setup prompt to let the agent generate the rules file(s). For CLI agents, run the agent’s init command in your terminal (e.g. claude for Claude Code, codex for Codex).

• Install relevant skills for the tools and frameworks you plan to use in your project.

• Connect the MCP tools your workflow requires, such as Context7 for documentation, GitHub for version control, or Figma for design references.

• Initialise a basic boilerplate for the project using the setup prompt, install the required packages and dependencies, configure linters, code formatters, and set up your testing framework.

• Set up pre-commit hooks (optional but very helpful). With pre-commit hooks, you can ensure code is automatically formatted and linted every time a commit is made.

• Add required environment variables that your app will be depended on like database paths and secret keys.

• Verify that your agent can read your project files and run commands by giving it a simple test prompt before diving into the actual work.

3. Create Product Requirement Documents (PRDs)

Once you've set up your development environment and the agent has generated your rules file, the next step is to create your PRDs. Use the planning prompts you prepared earlier and pass them to your coding agent. The agent will generate the PRD files outlining the implementation details, workflow, testing strategy, and acceptance criteria for each task. Review each PRD carefully before moving on. If something is missing or unclear, refine it now rather than letting the agent start building with incomplete instructions. Once you're satisfied, save the PRDs in your docs/prds folder and reference the folder path in your RULES config so the agent always knows where to find them.

If a task to outlined by a particular PRD is too long and complex, consider breaking it down into smaller, simpler PRDs. You could also add indexes or number your PRDs to let the AI know the sequence of execution.

4. Execution

At this stage, it's time for the agent to start making changes to your codebase. However, there is still a need for a human in the loop, and guardrails need to be in place. Here's how to go about it:

1. Start by instructing the coding agent to set up tests based on the details in each PRD. Unit tests for functional requirements, integration tests for workflows that span multiple services, and end-to-end tests for critical user flows. Test will ensure that the code written by the agent behaves exactly as it should.

2. Point the agent to a PRD and instruct it to implement the feature. Let it work through the task, then review the output. Check that the code follows the conventions in your rules file and handles edge cases. If something is off, don’t just tell the agent to “fix it” — be specific about what’s wrong and why.

3. Once you’re satisfied with the implementation, commit the changes. Keep commits small and focused on one PRD at a time. This makes it easier to track what changed, roll back if something breaks, and keep your git history clean.

4. Run the application and preview the changes locally. Test the feature manually to make sure it looks and behaves the way you expect. Automated tests catch logic errors, but they won't tell you if a button is in the wrong place or if the user experience feels off. If you spot any issues, feed them back to the agent with clear descriptions before moving on.

5. Run your tests to confirm everything works as expected. If any tests fail, point the agent to the failing tests and let it fix the issues before moving on to the next PRD. Repeat the cycle: implement, review, commit, test.

6. If two tasks can be run in parallel, for example a frontend component and its corresponding API endpoint, you can spin up multiple chat windows to work on both simultaneously. Some agents like Claude Code have sub-agents that handle this natively.

7. If everything is great, commit your code and push the branch with your changes to GitHub

5. Final Code Review and Quality Assurance

Before you deploy changes live to production, there needs to be a code review process. This can happen at a team or individual level. If your a solo dev, I recommend you have one main branch and use feature-branches make pull request to your main branch. This is make it similar as working with a team. Here are few recommendations:

• Set up a CI/CD pipeline that runs tests and checks code quality to ensure the code works and is safe to deploy. A tool you can use for this is GitHub Actions.

• You can use code review agents like CodeRabbit, Greptile or Copilot Review to automate pull reviews. From personal experience, I find CodeRabbit really useful in catching issues that are easy to miss, such as security vulnerabilities, inconsistent patterns, and missing edge cases.

• Use preview deployments to test your changes in a production-like environment before merging. You can set this up with an cloud services you use to host your application.

If every checks out, the changes can be merged and the update deployed.

Final Remarks

Context-based engineering is not about replacing developers with AI. It's about being intentional with how you use AI to build software. It also not vibe-coding because you are involved in the process.

Remember, the tools are powerful, but they're only as good as the context you provide. Ensure you set up the right environment for the agent to work with: a rules config, a clean and modular codebase, and well-written PRDs. If you do it right, you'll reap the benefits in productivity, excellent code quality and speed.

One constant in today’s world is problems. No matter the solution, no matter the initiatives, no matter the changes, there will always be problems. Does this mean problems are bad? Well… Not necessarily. In fact, problems create opportunities for changes that provide solutions.

No matter where you find yourself—at work, in your community, at your home—you will always discover problems. If you have a heat problem at your home, you’d buy fans or air conditioners that will help cool your home and make it more comfortable to live in. If a community or estate has a flooding problem, it means the leaders or developers need to build drainage systems that ensure excess water is well drained.

The issue arises when problems are not recognised or when problems are recognised and not solved. The ability to solve problems creates value, and people who are able to recognise problems and solve them are highly sought after.

Anyone can become a problem solver; you just need to open your mind to it. Whether it be in your industry, community, career, discipline, family, workspace, or home, the ability to solve problems should be something you desire to have and develop.

However, what makes one a problem solver? What are the key qualities or traits that you need to have in order to become a problem solver?

Here are 7 traits of problem solvers

1. Learning and Relearning

Think about this: Five years ago, the way we approached user research in product management was completely different. We relied heavily on surveys and focus groups. Today, we have behavioural analytics, heat mapping, and AI-powered user journey analysis. If you clung to old research methods without adapting, you’d miss crucial insights about how users actually interact with your product.

Learning starts with asking questions. Don’t just accept things as they are. Question the status quo.

I remember when I first started working on web applications. I used to manually handle deployment with FTP, which was tedious and error-prone. Then I asked someone more experienced, “Is there a better way to do this?” That simple question opened my eyes to automation and streamlined workflows like CI/CD. Now, what used to take me 30 minutes now takes 30 seconds. That’s the power of questioning the status quo.

You also need mentors and support. People who have walked the path before you can provide guidance, insight, and perspective. A mentor can help you see blind spots you didn’t know existed and challenge you to think differently.

Don’t be afraid to seek help or advice from those with more experience. Send that message. Ask that question in the community forum. Join spaces where experienced people in your field gather.

Beyond people, you need to leverage resources:

Let me give you an example: You’re a product designer tackling a complex user flow. Instead of spending days trying to figure it out in isolation, you study how other products handle similar flows, consult with your research team about user pain points, talk to developers about technical constraints, and prototype multiple versions. Within days, you have a solution that balances user needs with technical feasibility. That’s leveraging resources effectively.

Finally, learning means changing your perspective. Sometimes the solution isn’t about doing more but about seeing things differently.

I once spent weeks trying to optimize a slow process by tweaking individual steps. Then a colleague looked at it and said, “Why are you optimizing this process at all? We could eliminate it entirely by changing our approach earlier in the workflow.” Instant solution. I was so focused on making the process better that I didn’t step back to question whether we needed it at all.

Change your perspective, and you might discover solutions you never considered before.

2. Critical Thinking

Problem solvers don’t just think; they think deeply and widely. Critical thinking means analysing a problem from multiple angles, questioning assumptions, and evaluating evidence before jumping to conclusions.

Let’s say your product’s user engagement is dropping. A surface-level thinker might immediately say, “We need more features.”

But a critical thinker digs deeper and asks:

• Is it really about features, or are our existing features too complicated?

• Are we solving the right problem for our users?

• Has something changed in the market?

• Are competitors offering something we’re not?

• Is our onboarding experience confusing people?

Thinking deeply means going beyond surface-level understanding. Don’t just ask “what” but also “why” and “how.” Why is engagement dropping? How does this pattern differ across user segments? What changed in the last quarter? What are the root causes versus the symptoms?

I once worked on a project where users complained about a feature being slow. The initial assumption was that we had a performance issue. But when I dove deeper, I discovered the feature wasn’t slow—it was poorly designed. Users had to click through five screens to complete a task that should have taken one. No amount of technical optimisation would fix a design problem. That’s the difference between reacting and thinking critically.

Thinking widely means considering different perspectives and scenarios.

A critical thinker asks:

• What happens if the payment fails?

• What if they have items in their cart from a previous session?

You walk into the meeting and say, “We have a retention problem.” Your team asks, “What’s the issue?” You mumble something about user feedback and data trends, and everyone stares blankly. That’s a missed opportunity.

Instead, you could say, “I analysed our user journey data and interviewed 20 churned users. They’re leaving because our onboarding doesn’t clearly show them the core value within the first session. I have a plan to redesign the first-time experience that should improve week-one retention by at least 15%.”

Clear, concise, and everyone understands both the problem and the path forward.

Clearly conveying your ideas helps you gain more clarity—not just for others, but for yourself.

When you articulate your thoughts, you often discover gaps in your reasoning or new insights you hadn’t considered. I can’t count how many times I’ve started explaining a problem to a colleague only to suddenly realise the solution mid-sentence. That’s the rubber duck effect—explaining your problem forces you to think it through completely.

Communication is also about listening and reading cues. Pay attention to body language, tone, and context. Sometimes what’s not said is just as important as what is said.

If you’re presenting a strategy to your team and everyone’s arms are crossed with furrowed brows, that’s a cue that maybe your approach needs rethinking or better explanation.

In a remote work environment, reading cues becomes even more crucial. Is your colleague being brief in their messages because they’re busy, or are they frustrated about something? When you share an update and get emoji reactions instead of comments, what does that tell you? Learning to pick up these subtle signals helps you respond appropriately and build stronger relationships.

Communication in tech extends beyond conversations with people:

• A designer communicates through wireframes and prototypes

• A marketer communicates through copy and campaigns

• A hardware engineer communicates through schematics and specifications

• An engineer communicates through code and documentation

• A product manager communicates through specs and roadmaps

In each case, clarity is essential. A confusing wireframe leads to a poorly built product. Unclear documentation leads to support tickets and frustrated users. Vague specifications lead to manufacturing defects.

The better you communicate—whether with people, through your work, or across disciplines—the better results you’ll get. A designer who can explain their decisions to developers creates better implementations. A marketer who understands technical constraints creates more realistic campaigns. A salesperson who can communicate customer needs clearly helps the product team build the right solutions.

4. Systems Thinking

Great problem solvers understand that nothing exists in isolation. Systems thinking means seeing the big picture and understanding how different parts of a system interact and influence each other.

Let me illustrate with a real scenario: Imagine you’re a marketer tasked with improving conversion rates on a landing page. A non-systems thinker might change the headline and call it done. Problem solved, right? Not quite.

A systems thinker asks:

• If we change this headline to be more aggressive, how does that affect the type of leads we attract?

• Will sales be happy with these leads, or will they be unqualified prospects?

• How does this align with our brand voice?

• What happens to our SEO if we change this copy?

• How will this impact our ad campaigns that link to this page?

When you solve a problem in one area, how does it affect other areas? What are the ripple effects of your solution? Systems thinkers recognise that a quick fix in one place might create new problems elsewhere.

I once saw a product team add a new feature that users had been requesting. Engagement went up initially, but then customer support was flooded with tickets because the feature was confusing. The engineering team was overwhelmed with bug reports. The documentation team scrambled to create help articles. They fixed one problem while creating five others. That’s what happens when you don’t think in systems.

This trait requires you to step back and map out the entire ecosystem:

• Who are the stakeholders? (users, developers, designers, marketers, salespeople, customer support, operations, third-party vendors)

• What are the dependencies? (marketing depends on product being ready, which depends on design being finalised, which depends on user research being completed)

• What constraints exist? (budget limitations, time constraints, team capacity, technical debt)

A systems thinker considers:

• How does this affect product quality?

• Will customer satisfaction drop?

• What about warranty claims—will they increase?

• How does this impact our premium brand positioning?

• What will sales say when customers notice the difference?

• Is this new supplier reliable?

Here’s another example: Imagine you’re optimising your mobile app to reduce battery consumption. You reduce the frequency of data syncing to save battery. Great! But now users see outdated information, support gets flooded with complaints about data not updating, your retention metrics drop, and your app store rating decreases. One optimization created multiple new problems because you didn’t think about the system as a whole.

By understanding the system as a whole, you can design solutions that are sustainable and effective in the long term. Systems thinking prevents you from making short-sighted decisions. It encourages holistic solutions that address root causes rather than just symptoms.

5. Paying Attention to Details

In a fast-paced society, this trait is slowly fading, but it’s what creates the difference between mediocrity and excellence. Problem solvers pay attention to the small things that others overlook.

Details matter:

• In hardware design, a single miscalculated tolerance can mean thousands of defective units

• In marketing, a typo in an email to 50,000 subscribers can damage your brand

• In code, a missing validation check can expose user data

• In product management, overlooking edge cases can lead to terrible user experiences for minority segments

• In design, inconsistent spacing breaks the visual hierarchy

Think about the difference between a good product and a great product. A good product works. A great product works and also has thoughtful micro-interactions, consistent design language, helpful error messages, accessible interfaces for people with disabilities, and smooth transitions. Those details create user delight.

Here’s a scenario: You’re a designer creating a signup form. Someone who doesn’t pay attention to details creates input fields and a submit button. Done.

But someone who pays attention to details asks:

• Should the email field validate in real-time or on submit?

• What error messages will help users fix their mistakes quickly?

• Should the password field show a strength indicator?

• What happens when someone clicks submit twice?

• Can someone navigate this form using only a keyboard?

• Are our colour contrasts WCAG compliant?

• What about users on slow connections—do we show a loading state?

Let me give you a real-world example: I was reviewing a marketing landing page, and everything looked good at first glance. Then I noticed the contact form had a phone number field that only accepted exactly 11 digits. Sounds reasonable, right? But what about international prospects with different phone number formats? What about people who include spaces or dashes for readability? That one detail could have prevented dozens of legitimate leads from contacting us.

Paying attention to details doesn’t mean getting lost in perfection; it means being thorough and intentional. It means reviewing your work, testing your assumptions, and catching errors before they become bigger problems.

This trait requires patience and discipline. It’s easy to rush through tasks in our instant-gratification world, but slowing down to ensure quality saves time and frustration in the long run.

In design thinking, there’s a principle about intentionality. Every choice should be deliberate. Every pixel, every word of copy, every component specification, every user flow decision. When you experience products from companies known for excellence, you can feel the attention to detail. Those companies understand that details build trust and credibility.

6. Experimenting

Problem solvers are not afraid to try new ideas. Experimentation is about testing, learning, and refining your approach. It’s not about seeing if your idea is valid or not, it’s about improving it and gaining new perspectives.

Let me share a personal example: When I was building the landing page for Dome Academy, I had an idea for how the hero section should look. I built it, and honestly, it looked okay. But instead of settling, I experimented. I tried different layouts, different messaging approaches, various call-to-action placements. I tested different headlines with small audiences. What I thought was “okay” became exceptional because I was willing to experiment.

Every experiment teaches you something. Even when things don’t go as planned, you learn what doesn’t work, which brings you closer to what does. Thomas Edison famously said he didn’t fail 10,000 times making the light bulb—he just found 10,000 ways that didn’t work.

Let's say you're a product manager trying to improve user onboarding. You read that video tutorials might help. Instead of immediately investing in expensive video production, you experiment. You create a simple prototype with one short video for one part of the onboarding, measure the results, and see if it actually improves completion rates. If it does, you expand it. If it doesn’t, you try something else. That’s smart experimentation.

Experimenting requires courage because it means stepping into the unknown. You might make mistakes, face setbacks, or encounter unexpected challenges. But each iteration makes your solution stronger.

The key to effective experimenting is to test and remodify. Build a prototype, gather feedback, make adjustments, and test again. This iterative process helps you refine your ideas and create better solutions.

Here’s a practical approach to experimenting:

• Don’t assume you know the best solution upfront

• Try different approaches and document what you learn

• Test one variable at a time so you know what’s working

• Measure results with actual data, not gut feelings

• Be willing to kill ideas that don’t work

• Iterate based on real feedback, not assumptions

In product development, this is rapid prototyping. Companies test different approaches constantly—different pricing models, different feature sets, different messaging, different user flows. They measure the results and iterate. That’s how they optimise for real outcomes. You can apply the same principle to your work, whether you’re in design, marketing, sales, engineering, or operations.

Let’s say you’re in sales trying to improve your pitch effectiveness. Instead of assuming you know what resonates, you could experiment. Try different opening approaches with different prospects. Test various ways of presenting your value proposition. Track what leads to meetings and what doesn’t. Refine based on actual results, not assumptions. That’s experimentation driving better outcomes.

7. Collaboration

No one solves problems alone. The best solutions often come from collaboration—sharing ideas, processes, and experiences with others.

Let me paint a picture: You’re working on a feature that requires balancing user needs, technical feasibility, design excellence, and business goals. You’re a product manager, and you could try to solve this alone. Or you could collaborate—bring your designer to understand user experience implications, consult with engineers about technical constraints, talk to sales about customer needs, work with marketing on positioning. Together, you build something that works on all fronts. That’s the power of collaboration.

Collaboration means learning from people with different skills, backgrounds, and perspectives. What you lack, someone else might excel in. By combining knowledge, you create solutions that are more robust and innovative than anything you could build alone.

Think about major tech innovations. The smartphone wasn’t built by one person—it required hardware engineers, software developers, industrial designers, UX researchers, supply chain experts, and marketers all working together. Open source projects thrive because thousands of people collaborate—contributing code, reporting bugs, improving documentation, helping newcomers. That’s collaboration at scale, and it has changed the world.

Even in your learning journey, collaboration matters. Join communities in your field. Share your progress. Ask questions. Help others when you can. Celebrate each other’s wins. When someone shares that they just solved a problem you’re facing, that helps you. When you share a resource that helped you, that helps others.

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Bias (in AI)

Deep Learning

The number of tokens often correlates with the computational cost and time required for processing.

Training Data

Training data refers to the dataset used to train a machine learning model. It consists of examples from which the model learns to identify patterns, relationships, and features. Tech space can feel really fast-paced. In recent years the amount of innovations we've seen so far feel so unprecedented. Especially as the new AI revolution kicked in full string, it gets a little harder to stay up-to-date with what's new.

We all heard these quotes recently:

• "AI will take our jobs"

• "The tech job market is now harder than usual"

• "Your basic knowledge is not enough"

• “There are no jobs for junior tech professionals anymore"

• “Company A just laid off over 1,000 employees"

Yeah I get it, it looks like you're COOKED! But are you? Really?

First of all, Let's get the facts

Fact #1: What you know is not enough

The first fact is "what you know is not enough". Yes, that's the hard truth. This means we need to always keep constantly learning. But no matter how much you learn, new things we always come out.

Does this mean you should give up entirely? No!

Even though what you learnt may become obsolete in 5 years, one thing remains constant fundamentals. Fundamentals are the building blocks of every field of technology.

Fundamentals don't mean basics alone, it means the principles, laws and binding that make up the framework of a field. For example, in software engineering, one key fundamental concept to know is Algorithms & Data Structures; for UI/UX, you need to know Design Principles (Spacing, Alignment, Hierarchy, etc.).

When you understand the fundamentals, you can dive into deeper concepts. One essential thing to know is how to build and create.

Nothing keeps you more abreast in technology than consistent practice with real-world systems. When you build as you learn, you form neural pathways in your brain that solidify your learning experience.

Fact #2: AI is getting better at doing our jobs

I'm sure you might be tired of seeing this again and again but you admit is true. And sometimes, it could make us afraid if we are being honest. AI is growing at an unprecedented rate, even mind-boggling at times.

But should we worried about A.I. taking our jobs as tech professionals? Not really!

Here's the thing, you can actually use A.I. to your advantage

What you do need to do is learn to use it.

• Make AI your daily sidekick. Treat tools like Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude, or whichever assistant you prefer, as extensions of your brain. Use them to scaffold your work:

  • Draft boilerplate code (then optimise it).

  • Generate design mockups (then tweak to fit your brand).

  • Brainstorm edge cases for your feature (then test them).

• Build “AI fluency.” Just like you learned to Google errors five years ago, now you learn to prompt-engineer. Knowing how to ask the right question can save you hours.

• Stay hands-on. Don’t let AI do 100% of your work. Use it to speed up the boring/repetitive bits, then take over for the creative and critical thinking.

• Get deeper in your understanding. Just like I mentioned in Fact #1, you will need to grow your depth of knowledge your field even beyond the scope of your work.

If you don’t pick up these tools, you run the risk of being outpaced by someone who does and it’s not because they’re “smarter,” it’s because they embraced the more efficient way of getting work done.

Fact #3: You're going to feel like an imposter

You have probably heard people talk about imposter syndrome as though it is a disease you need to cure. The truth is imposter syndrome is more like a signal that you are venturing into new territory.

When you feel that voice in your head whisper “Who am I to do this” or “Someone else could do it better” you need to push your boundaries and challenge yourself to learn.

Here is how to turn that uneasy feeling into motivation.

1. First, Acknowledge it. The next time you hear that doubt voice simply name it. Say to yourself “That is just my imposter talking.” Once you have put a name to it you rob it of some of its power.

2. Second, Record your wins. Every bug fix, every feature you ship, every positive comment from a user/supervisor is evidence that you belong here. Keep a simple list on your phone or in a notebook and review it when doubt creeps back in.

3. Third, Share your thoughts with someone you trust. When you realise your peers and mentors have felt the same way you will see that imposter syndrome is nothing to be ashamed of.

4. Finally, Build your competence with projects. There nothing that makes you more confident of your skills than up–skilling yourself.

Imposter syndrome is an invitation to grow, not a verdict on your worth.

Fact #4: Plateaus are real

Growth sometimes feels like climbing a mountain. You sprint uphill, you breathe hard, you feel the excitement of progress. Then suddenly you hit a flat spot.

May at this point, you may feel like you've peaked.

You spend hours reading docs or replaying tutorials and you wonder if you are making any progress at all. Or maybe you discover your stuck in a role for up to 3+ years without any promotion or significant advancement.

Is this a peak? Not really but it is a plateau.

That flat spot is called a plateau and and it's the point where

Plateaus aren’t failures; they’re part of the journey. But if you don’t know how to climb off them, you can get stuck.

You need to need to do the following:

• Shake things up. Learn advanced interaction design and motion principles, try writing technical specs, exploring a new framework/tool, or contributing to open source. Novelty reignites learning.

• Set micro-goals. Instead of “get better at React” or “Master design system," aim for “build a custom hook by the end of the week” or “Create a complete colour scheme that match website's brand,” Small wins add up.

• Seek feedback. Code reviews, design critiques, or even teaching someone else can reveal blind spots you didn’t know you had.

Be weary of the dangers of getting too comfortable in a plateau. It could lead you to tolerate mediocrity and become more resistant to change instead of growing and improving. A lot of professionals have failed to grow because they got comfortable in their plateaus.

Finally

Believe in yourself and be willing to bet on your future.

You can't always change or influence what happens in the world tomorrow but one thing you can do is develop yourself to be FUTURE-PROOF.

Probably sounds more like cliché now but we all used to the phrase; “New year, new me". Although a lot of people say this quote a lot, how many really put in the effort to make sure they change something about their lives in 2025.

First of all, you can't but be grateful for all that happened in 2024, if not for anything but the fact you're still alive till this moment means there is still more time to make the best every moment.

Therefore, this year, it is important to not only want a better outcomes for yourself but to also take intentional steps towards achieving them.

To do that you need to ask yourself these questions:

• What did I do well last year and how can I improve that?

• What went wrong last year and how can I change that?

• What are my targets for this year?

• What do I need to meet my goals?

• What systems do I need to put in place to achieve my goals for the year?

Let's start with the first question.

What did I do well last year and how can I improve that?

When it comes to new year resolutions, a lot of people love to concentrate on the negatives from the previous year. However, it is actually more beneficial to start with the positives from the previous year. Any win or improvement from last year no matter how small is valid win.

• Did you improve your sleep routine

• Pick up a new skill

• Land an entry level role or got more interview opportunities

• Make new friends, etc

All these wins are essential. Not just for a sense of gratitude but it let's you acknowledge the right paths you've taken in the previous year and how they benefited you.

So take a moment (could be right now) and think about all the good things you started or gained last year, jot them down and then ponder on how you could do better. Just like when taking a SWOT analysis where you first start with your strengths, start with the positives from last year, acknowledge them then map out a plan to achieve them. Then you can look a the negatives.

What went wrong last year and how can I change that?

This question may sound difficult but it's a very necessary question you need to ask yourself. Look, 2024 was not a perfect year for anyone. Like every other year, there were still goals we all fail to achieve or areas which we fall short.

The point is not to dwell on failures but instead to learn from them and make better plans to conquer them next time. It's called “failing forward". So what was your failure from last year:

• Did you give up on learning a skill because it became hard

• Fumble a job or gig or opportunity

• Fail to change a bad habit

• Fail to take action because you were afraid

2025 is another chance to change that. There are things you can't change but there are things you can change, maybe with a little help from a friend, mentor or accountability system. The best thing you can do is to be accountable and know that improving for the better is your personal responsibility.

And to do that you will need to have agenda:

What are my target for this year?

Goals are essential because they can give you a sense of directions. However, it is important to give great thought when coming up with your goals for the year. A lot of people make unrealistic or myopic goals at the start of the year with no clear line of action on how to achieve them. You need to avoid this.

You may know this, but even if you don't, it is important that your goals are SMART, i.e.:

• SPECIFIC: You have clear objective on what you want to achieve, change or improve.

• MEASURABLE: You need to be able to quantity the effort needed to get the goals and the results it will give you.

• ATTAINABLE: This is more than the fact that your goal can be achieve but also that you believe that you can do what it takes to achieve it.

• REALISTIC: Let not just be attainable but let it be real to you. It should positively influence you for the better.

• TIME-BOUND: Every moment matters, so you need to give time periods on what you want to achieve whether it be on a quarterly, monthly, weekly or daily basics.

One important thing to note about setting targets for the year is that you can't hit them all at once. You need to specify periods when you will work towards those goals and keep to achieving important goals first before others.

Then you will need support:

What do I need to achieve my goals?

For every endeavour worth pursuing, there is always a price to pay. For example, if you want to lose some pounds of weight, you need to change you diet and cut out junk food. Likewise, if you want to master a programming, you need to spend hours writing code and building valuable projects instead of using that same time to binge Netflix or doom-scroll on social media.

It also not just about sacrifices, you need support too. You can call them props. Just like in movie production, props help them in making some action sequences, you gather props that can help you hit your goals. These props could be:

• An online course that teaches you a skill

• A mentor who helps you review your CV and portfolio

• A friend who collaborates with you on side projects

• A community where you can find opportunities

• A book that teaches you principles of a skill or endeavour

In any form, props are like steps on a ladder to achieving goals. Without support you may find the process hard, frustrating or even give up.

However, you can have great support around you and still fail to achieve goals. You need a system.

What systems do I need to put in place to achieve my goals for the year?

Alex Hormozi once quoted this; “A consistent fool will achieve more than a distracted genius”. Goals are great, support you need to achieve them better but without a system to achieve them, you may fail.

It's not a new thing, you start the new year enthusiastic to achieve your resolutions but end up falling short at the end. This is most because you lack a system.

By system, this isn't referring to a complicated mechanism with a lot of charts, spreadsheets and automation. Actually this is referring to simple (boring even) routines you can consistently practice each day that draw you closer to your goal.

An example of a great system could be:

• Waking up early each day to exercise then shower each day before doing anything else.

• Documenting what you achieved the night before you sleep and making plans for the next day

• Having todo list and using your calendar to schedule your time.

• Having an accountability partner you report to each week to tell them about how much progress you made in achieving your goals.

In short, the important aspects of making system is time and action. Dreams without actions remain dreams.

Make every time count.

3. A - Availability: Availability is the ability of data to be accessible at all times without delay.

Phishing Attack 🎣

Phishing attacks are one of the most common forms of cybersecurity threats. This is when an attacker tries to trick a victim into giving them your private/sensitive information, like their passwords or credit card numbers.

This happens when an attack sends them a message mimicking a company/brand usually through an email or text message with a link to a fake website that looks almost like the real website. The website usually has a form asking visitors to input sensitive data like credit card information, passwords, or wallet secret keys. If the victim falls for the trick and enters their private data, their data is stored in the attacker’s computer and the site responds with a redundant message. The attacker can then use that data to gain access to their private accounts, drain personal funds or impersonate the victim.

Phishing attacks are common, but you can prevent them by verifying the legitimacy of messages received from any organisation. Also, verify the URL of websites you visit to ensure they are authentic. For example, an attacker can use a fake URL like support.good-bank.cr.com whereas the real website is support.goodbank.com.

Malware 🕷️

Malware is an invasive software which once downloaded into a device or server can perform malicious attacks on the system.

There are different types of malware:

Viruses: This is the most common type of malware. The nature of viruses is that they can spread from device to device through a network or storage device. Viruses usually accomplish a variety of exploits, from less severe ones like slowing down a device/server to more severe ones that delete files from the system.

Worms: This is a malicious software that is capable of replicating itself without human intervention. They usually spread across a network like a Local Area Network (LAN) or an organisation’s private network.

Trojan horse: This malware is used to execute attacks on a device/server from a remote location.

Ransomware: This is the most severe form of malware. This malware encrypts or moves the information of a device/server so that it is inaccessible to the user. The attacker usually requests a ransom to be paid to them to recover the encrypted or stolen data. A popular example of ransomware is Wanacry which spread rapidly across the globe in 2017, encrypting data on Windows PCs and demanding ransom payments in Bitcoin for decryption.

You can protect yourself from malware using up-to-date software, proper antivirus software, not interfacing with infected computers, and not downloading software indiscriminately online.

SQL injection 💉

This is when raw SQL commands are inputted directly into an application to perform malicious actions on an organisation’s database. SQL (Structured Query Language) perform actions known as queries on relational databases. An attacker can use SQL injection to steal data from the database, falsify database tables or even delete all the organisation’s data.

Yahoo is a famous company that came under an SQL injection attack. In 2012, an SQL injection attack on Yahoo’s website exposed usernames and passwords of around 450,000 accounts.

SQL injection can be prevented by sanitizing incoming strings that will passed into the database, using robust ORMs that check for these attacks and using row-level security to avoid authorised queries on a database.

Brute force attack 🔨

This is when an attacker systematically tries every possible password combination to gain unauthorized access to a system or account, exploiting weak or common passwords to break into secure areas.

Brute force attacks can be prevented by using stronger passwords and enabling multi-factor authentication on applications you use. Companies can also protect their users from getting hacked by using rate-limiting, bot prevention mechanisms like Captcha, and offering alternative means of authentication like OTPs, magic links and passkeys.

Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack 💥

DDoS happens when a server or application is intentionally overloaded with too much traffic from multiple devices. When this happens, it can cause the application to slow down, stop responding, increase hosting costs or even break down the servers.

A popular DDoS attack is the 2016 Dyn attack, where a massive botnet overwhelmed the DNS provider Dyn, causing widespread outages and disrupting major websites like Twitter, Netflix, and Reddit.

DDoS attacks can be prevented by using Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) e.g. Cloudflare to handle traffic to your site, setting up firewalls, rate-limiting, adding traffic caps, and using redundant backup servers in case of an incident.

Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) 📜

This is when an attacker injects malicious scripts into a website. The script can be executed to steal the user session data (cookies or tokens) and carry out actions on behalf of the user.

XSS attacks can be prevented while creating websites by using HTTP-only and secure cookies, avoiding inline Javascript, using frameworks that sanitise HTML codes and using a secure web framework.

Man-in-the-middle attack (MITM) 👨🏻‍💻

A Man-in-the-Middle (MITM) attack happens when an attacker secretly intercepts and potentially alters the two services. This means the attacker can intercept a message from the sender, and steal or alter it before it is sent to the receiver.

The most popular way to mitigate MITM attacks is by using encryption. The first form of encryption is using HTTPS over HTTP, this ensures that all requests made online by users are secure. However, some MITM attacks cannot be prevented by HTTPS, you can protest against them by using VPNs to tunnel information, private key encryption and using intrusion detection systems (IDS).

Social Engineering 🧠

This happens when an attacker pretends to be a trusted authority to deceive a victim into divulging confidential information or performing actions that compromise security. A popular example of social engineering attacks is scam calls.

Common Terms Used in Cybersecurity

1. Rainbow tables: Rainbow tables are pre-computed databases used to quickly crack hashed passwords by matching them with pre-hashed values.

2. Zero-day vulnerability: A zero-day vulnerability is a security flaw in software that is unknown to the vendor and yet to be fixed, making it susceptible to attacks at any time.

7. Penetration testing: Penetration testing, or pen testing, is a simulated cyberattack on a computer system, network, or application to identify and exploit vulnerabilities, helping to improve security.

Deliberately engage in practising your new skill, focusing on specific aspects of the skill and gradually improving over time. For instance, with a profound knowledge of coding in Python, you start practising what you have learnt while still learning. You might make mistakes along the way, but each attempt helps improve your skill and confidence. It is important to note that repetition is the key to continuous practice here as it helps to solidify your understanding and develop muscle memory.

Reflect:

At this point, you have to give yourself some time to consider your development and experiences. Reflect on what went well. Ask yourself these questions: “What could have been done better?” “What might have caused the error?” “What could have been done differently?” This allows you to learn from both successes and failures while building your future efforts and refining your approach.

Unlearn:

This involves letting go of outdated knowledge, misconceptions or things that may hinder your progress in your chosen skill set. It requires humility and a willingness to challenge your assumptions. Relearn:

After unlearning, it’s time to embrace new insights and perspectives. You have to seek out opportunities to expand and deepen your knowledge continuously.
