Cybersecurity Triad (C.I.A)

There are three important aspects of any secure system. They include:

1. C - Confidentiality: Confidentiality deals with the aspect of protecting data from being viewed by authorized parties. In other words, this ensures the privacy of data.

2. I - Integrity: Integrity means that data cannot be changed or deleted by any unauthorized party.

3. A - Availability: Availability is the ability of data to be accessible at all times without delay.

Different types of cyber attacks

Phishing Attack 🎣

Phishing attacks are one of the most common forms of cybersecurity threats. This is when an attacker tries to trick a victim into giving them your private/sensitive information, like their passwords or credit card numbers.

This happens when an attack sends them a message mimicking a company/brand usually through an email or text message with a link to a fake website that looks almost like the real website. The website usually has a form asking visitors to input sensitive data like credit card information, passwords, or wallet secret keys. If the victim falls for the trick and enters their private data, their data is stored in the attacker’s computer and the site responds with a redundant message. The attacker can then use that data to gain access to their private accounts, drain personal funds or impersonate the victim.

Phishing attacks are common, but you can prevent them by verifying the legitimacy of messages received from any organisation. Also, verify the URL of websites you visit to ensure they are authentic. For example, an attacker can use a fake URL like support.good-bank.cr.com whereas the real website is support.goodbank.com.

Malware 🕷️

Malware is an invasive software which once downloaded into a device or server can perform malicious attacks on the system.

There are different types of malware:

Viruses: This is the most common type of malware. The nature of viruses is that they can spread from device to device through a network or storage device. Viruses usually accomplish a variety of exploits, from less severe ones like slowing down a device/server to more severe ones that delete files from the system.

Worms: This is a malicious software that is capable of replicating itself without human intervention. They usually spread across a network like a Local Area Network (LAN) or an organisation’s private network.

Trojan horse: This malware is used to execute attacks on a device/server from a remote location.

Ransomware: This is the most severe form of malware. This malware encrypts or moves the information of a device/server so that it is inaccessible to the user. The attacker usually requests a ransom to be paid to them to recover the encrypted or stolen data. A popular example of ransomware is Wanacry which spread rapidly across the globe in 2017, encrypting data on Windows PCs and demanding ransom payments in Bitcoin for decryption.

You can protect yourself from malware using up-to-date software, proper antivirus software, not interfacing with infected computers, and not downloading software indiscriminately online.

SQL injection 💉

This is when raw SQL commands are inputted directly into an application to perform malicious actions on an organisation’s database. SQL (Structured Query Language) perform actions known as queries on relational databases. An attacker can use SQL injection to steal data from the database, falsify database tables or even delete all the organisation’s data.

Yahoo is a famous company that came under an SQL injection attack. In 2012, an SQL injection attack on Yahoo’s website exposed usernames and passwords of around 450,000 accounts.

SQL injection can be prevented by sanitizing incoming strings that will passed into the database, using robust ORMs that check for these attacks and using row-level security to avoid authorised queries on a database.

Brute force attack 🔨

This is when an attacker systematically tries every possible password combination to gain unauthorized access to a system or account, exploiting weak or common passwords to break into secure areas.

Brute force attacks can be prevented by using stronger passwords and enabling multi-factor authentication on applications you use. Companies can also protect their users from getting hacked by using rate-limiting, bot prevention mechanisms like Captcha, and offering alternative means of authentication like OTPs, magic links and passkeys.

Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack 💥

DDoS happens when a server or application is intentionally overloaded with too much traffic from multiple devices. When this happens, it can cause the application to slow down, stop responding, increase hosting costs or even break down the servers.

A popular DDoS attack is the 2016 Dyn attack, where a massive botnet overwhelmed the DNS provider Dyn, causing widespread outages and disrupting major websites like Twitter, Netflix, and Reddit.

DDoS attacks can be prevented by using Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) e.g. Cloudflare to handle traffic to your site, setting up firewalls, rate-limiting, adding traffic caps, and using redundant backup servers in case of an incident.

Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) 📜

This is when an attacker injects malicious scripts into a website. The script can be executed to steal the user session data (cookies or tokens) and carry out actions on behalf of the user.

XSS attacks can be prevented while creating websites by using HTTP-only and secure cookies, avoiding inline Javascript, using frameworks that sanitise HTML codes and using a secure web framework.

Man-in-the-middle attack (MITM) 👨🏻‍💻

A Man-in-the-Middle (MITM) attack happens when an attacker secretly intercepts and potentially alters the two services. This means the attacker can intercept a message from the sender, and steal or alter it before it is sent to the receiver.

The most popular way to mitigate MITM attacks is by using encryption. The first form of encryption is using HTTPS over HTTP, this ensures that all requests made online by users are secure. However, some MITM attacks cannot be prevented by HTTPS, you can protest against them by using VPNs to tunnel information, private key encryption and using intrusion detection systems (IDS).

Social Engineering 🧠

This happens when an attacker pretends to be a trusted authority to deceive a victim into divulging confidential information or performing actions that compromise security. A popular example of social engineering attacks is scam calls.

Common Terms Used in Cybersecurity

1. Rainbow tables: Rainbow tables are pre-computed databases used to quickly crack hashed passwords by matching them with pre-hashed values.

2. Zero-day vulnerability: A zero-day vulnerability is a security flaw in software that is unknown to the vendor and yet to be fixed, making it susceptible to attacks at any time.

3. Zero-day exploit: A zero-day exploit is an attack that targets the vulnerable parts of software that are yet to be detected by the vendor.

4. Black hats and White hats: Black hats are hackers who exploit vulnerable parts of software for malicious purposes. White hats are hackers who detect vulnerabilities in software and inform the vendor about them.

5. Encryption: Encryption is the process of converting information into a coded format that only authorized parties can read, ensuring that the data remains private and secure from unauthorized access.

6. Backdoor: A backdoor is a hidden method or vulnerability in a software or system that allows unauthorized access to the data or functionalities, bypassing normal security measures.’

7. Penetration testing: Penetration testing, or pen testing, is a simulated cyberattack on a computer system, network, or application to identify and exploit vulnerabilities, helping to improve security.

Let's start with a familiar story

You've been actively searching for a role online, and suddenly you see a job ad for a dream role in your dream company or gig. You read the job requirements. Boy! You’re suitable for this job!

You get tinkering, dust off some of your resumes, review them, get them vetted by friends and your mentor, choose the best one, fill the form with a compelling cover letter, and submit. You get an email almost immediately, they like you, but you must complete a few stages.

The first stage is an assessment test of your skills, it's a challenge to prove you are knowledgeable about the role. You go through the test, O wow! Quite a stuff but in the end, you made the 80th percentile. O yes! That means you passed.

After a few days, you get a congratulatory email for the test you just took but not yet, hold up! You still have a couple of interviews to do to make sure. So the time is set. You prepare like your reading for your final exams.

The first interview comes, it is technical, you’re asked really pressing questions about that field but you answer them. After the gruelling session, your interviewer/s is/are impressed. You really proved you are knowledgeable in that subject and they see potential. The next day you get positive feedback, it's up to the final stage.

Now, you are at the final interview. You are excited yet a bit apprehensive. This interview is quite chill unlike the last. It’s probably with the CEO or an HR rep. They tell you about the vision and mission of the company and ask you some personal questions about yourself.

You must be feeling, “Mehn this job is finally mine!” You start dreaming about the clothing you would rock in church when you give testimony when the interviewer brings you back to the reality that they send you a response in a few days. You wait excitedly. This would finally be the one!

Only to get this!!!! Emotional Damage!!!

Yep! It’s a rejection letter! Probably the 2 millionths in a role (just exaggerating) We've all faced rejection probably in careers, business, education, relationships etc… Las las everybody will chop breakfast!

But Why? What went wrong?

Not really.

Is rejection a bad thing? Probably not, but staying in a state of continuous rejection or feeling bit down about a particular rejection isn’t the way forward.

There are a particular group of people that keep getting rejections on a regular You’ve probably been praying and fasting for a turnaround. You’re probably regular on either NLP or NSPPD or Prayerrain screaming at the top of your lungs for a turnaround.

How do you overcome rejection?

Strategy #1: is to do an evaluation. You can ask the company why they rejected you and if they are kind enough some might answer. Resist the urge to cry or beg, and take the feedback with acceptance and humility.

Strategy #2: Build an outstanding profile for yourself online. If you are a professional in a skill like UI/UX, you need people to know that too Take to social media, post your work, and talk about your thought process and the problem that you built/designed/wrote solved.

Strategy #3: Join a network of growth-minded people who are striving in the space. A great to do this is by joining Discord channels, Slack, Twitter and WhatsApp A community will connect you to a pool of experience to learn from and more opportunities.

Bonus Tip: If you want a second shot at it, you can also contact the employers directly. You can contact an employer through their official LinkedIn profile. As a rule of thumb, be straightforward and concise.

Finally, believe in yourself, pray continuously and remain focused. Consider yourself a learner with a lot of potentials and get grinding. Remember in the end, what will matter more is how much you’ve grown and not whether you got accepted or rejected at a job.

Tips on how to get started 

1 . Certification

Getting certified may be the fastest way to break into information technology. While a tech degree can take 1-4 years, certifications can be studied for and earned in just a few weeks. There are many comparisons between getting a degree or earning certifications, but a degree isn’t necessary for entering the IT workforce.  

Examples of such certifications are those provided by top players in your career of choice eg Google, Microsoft, Amazon, etc, issued from completing specific courses they provide.

It is also important to know how you learn best and maximize that, some individuals learn faster through books, some through video tutorials, and some others in a physical class. Find out the one that suits you the most and then complement that with others.

2. Your Degree in Another Field May Be a Huge Asset 

You may be tearing your hair out with regret, wondering why you used all that time in college on a degree that isn't helping you with your quest for a lifelong career. But don't be too hard on yourself. Many employers are more inclined to offer you a job simply because you were able to accomplish the feat of earning a degree. 

Instead of focusing on how your degree may have cost you time and money, focus on the ways that your degree can be applied in moving your life forward into an IT career. For example, an IT worker with a literature degree will be more likely to take a creative approach to problem-solving and have superior writing and communication skills. A philosophy major has a deeper understanding of logic and a unique way of approaching challenges.

With the rapid evolution of IT, there is a huge demand for individuals from diverse backgrounds and unique perspectives. 

3. Be Open to Starting at the Bottom

It's important to note that you may have to "start over" in IT. You may have been a manager or an advanced professional in your old industry, but remember — you're leaving it for a reason. Be prepared to start with an entry-level position and work your way up. The experience you get working at the bottom of the ladder will be valuable as you grow into a more challenging position. 

 Don't worry too much though - the earning potential you will have in IT is only limited by the work you put in.

If you want a "head start," consider getting a degree or a few certifications. These credentials have the potential to help you out significantly. 

 Getting educated about your field of interest shows your commitment to your new industry and helps to give you an advantage. It can also prepare you for more advanced opportunities down the line. With no experience, you still won't be able to jump to the top of the ladder. But with so many open positions all across the IT industry, the right credentials can help you quickly climb to higher-paying and more specialized positions in IT. 

4. Networking 

You may be surprised by how powerful your connections can be. When looking to change career, it is important to attend preferably physical events related to your career of choice, you can get mentors who can help guide you in your career and learn from their experience, and your future referrals for a role can be a result of who you met at an event.

Make sure to use social media, follow relevant players both individuals and firms in your niche, and by simply putting out posts out there letting your connections know your progress and that you are looking to get into tech may bring out an opportunity that you never expected. 

 5. Look for Crossover Positions 

While you might not have any direct experience, there are IT workers in every industry that use networks and computers (practically every industry out there). For example, if you have years of experience in car sales, it might help to look for an IT position at a car dealership. Understanding half of the business can go a long way towards making you a valuable employee right from the start, even if your tech skills aren't top-notch. You'll still have to start at the bottom, but it could be the perfect way to gain your first year or two of IT experience. 

 All in all, it is not impossible to start a career in IT with no experience — hence the word "start" — but many individuals are still skeptical of making the leap into IT. By arming yourself with the right tools and know-how you can significantly increase your chances of starting a career in tech that will last a lifetime.
